Spiders Cause Mazda to Recall Cars

Mazda cars will recall its 42, 000 Mazda6 cars because spiders are attracted to the hydrocarbons that enables them to make webs and causes fuel tanks to crack. This the second time that the Japanese car company recalled their units followed by the threat of spiders webbing the vent hoses in 2011.

Mazda will recall car models manufactured from 2010 until 2012 as these have the increased probability of fuel leaks and fire. The Mazda cars being recalled have 2.5-liter engines.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), when spiders build webs in the engine, the webs block the evaporative canister vent hoses which cause the fuel tank to have excessive negative pressure that results to cracking and leaking of fuel tank.

Three years ago, Mazda also recalled their models manufactured from 2009-2011 because of the same concern. Mazda reported that a certain species of spider, "could possibly intrude even with the expanding spring."

That certain kind of Spiders is allegedly the yellow sac spider. The spider originated from the United Kingdom and is yellow and beige in color. They are attracted to gasoline and hide in the tubes during the day and appear mostly during the night time. They weave webs around themselves which appear like cocoons. Yellow sac spiders' bite and are venomous.

Reuters reported that Mazda remedied the problems through adding of springs to the canister vent lines and it worked for some time until another wave of reports of cracked fuel tanks reappeared.

The company ensured that they will upgrade the cars' software for free, "to ensure that the fuel tank pressure doesn't build up."

Mazda also assured that they will advise car owners who drives the Mazda6 to bring their cars to dealers for checking and clearing. Apparently, the recall only involves Mazda6 units made in a manufacturing plant in Flat Rock, Michigan. Other Mazda models are not included in the recall.

Mazda has yet to verify or confirm reports of casualties or injured caused by the problem.
