South Portland-Lucky him? Maybe not.
A homeless man in Maine was supposed to withdraw $140 in his account. But the ATM machine had technical glitches and dispensed more than the amount he needed, so he took advantage and withdrew a surprising amount of $37, 000! A very lucky day, indeed!
But the woman behind him became impatient when it took him time to withdraw from the ATM machine. Already, the woman noticed that the homeless man has been filling his shopping bag with some cash he got from the ATM so she reported it to the police. The incident happened at around 5:30 in the morning.
When the police arrived, he handed to them the $37, 000 he got from the malfunctioning ATM machine which ended his lucky day. On the one hand, he is still lucky that authorities did not arrest him. The amount has been returned to the bank.
According to the police, it was first time that such happened in South Portland although they claim that they had previous encounter of the homeless man. Lieutenant Todd Bernard told WGME, "The man used his bank card to withdraw $140 from his account, but then kept going."
As it turns out, the TD Bank said that the ATM machine had a glitch which enabled the man to withdraw thousands of dollars.
TD Bank suspended the operation of the ATM machine. "Due to a code error, this TD Bank ATM dispensed an incorrect amount of cash to a customer," the spokesperson of TD Bank said.
The bank assured its customers that there were no accounts affected in the ATM machine glitch. Authorities refused to name the homeless man and claimed that no charges were filed against him.
