YouTube Ban From Channels of Turkey, A Week After Twitter Ban As Damaging Audio Files Spread Through the Websites but Where’s the Freedom of Speech?

YouTube ban from channel of Turkey was implemented after the spread of damaging audio files from a state security meeting.

On Thursday, YouTube ban from channel started as the website was used to spread a leaked audio file which contains sensitive issues coming from a state security meeting. The said meeting discussed its possible military action in Syria. Plans of having a missile attack that would trigger military response was also in the said YouTube upload.

The leakage of such damaging audio file that resulted in YouTube ban from channels of Turkey is suspected to be leaked by the political opponents of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The said Prime Minister who was involved in a corruption scandal and hit by street protests angrily burst on his political rivals as the audio file started to circle the website of YouTube.

"They have leaked something on YouTube today. It was a meeting on our national security. It is a vile, cowardly, immoral act. We will go into their caves. Who are you serving by eavesdropping?" the Prime Minister said in a campaign rally in the southeastern province of Diyarbakir.

Just a week ago, the social networking site, Twitter, was also banned from the said country as other audio files have spread in the said site which involved Prime Minister Erdogan in an issue of corruption. As the news of Twitter and YouTube ban from channels of the country broke out, many have reacted to such action and questioned the freedom of speech.

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has defended the decision of the government on YouTube ban from channels of Turkey. According to him, the said audio file is a declaration of war against the Turkish state and nation. He also added that the telecommunications authority reached out to YouTube requesting to take down the recording but the website didn't respond to the request which eventually resulted for YouTube ban from channels.

"Nothing is more important than Turkey's security, the well-being of the people or the individual rights of our citizens," Davutoglu said.
