Will Gardner's 'Good Wife' death indeed came as a total shocker like what the CBS hit show has been teasing ever since Season 5 began airing. Prior to which, everyone was expecting for a game-changing twist among the characters and the storyline, nobody thought of a male lead character dying on last Sunday night's episode "Dramatics, Your Honor." The title and synopsis didn't even give us all a slight hint on what is to come, until we started to bawl as we witnessed the final moments of Will Gardner in 'The Good Wife.' Two questions then started to play in our minds: Why did they have to kill off Will Gardner and where does the show go from here?
It was totally one of the best-kept secrets of the show. One moment, we were starting to think that Alicia and Will might be rekindling their romance anytime soon, and the next, we were contemplating on how Alicia will deal with the death of his on-again, off-again flame. Surely, everyone was at loss for words when out of nowhere, Will Gardner was gunned by his client in the courtroom. To make things worse, he was declared dead in the hospital before we could even cross our fingers to spare him from the bloody encounter. However, it was not just a nightmare, it was a reality on the show, one that we can't deny took our sanity for a couple of minutes, or even hours after watching the episode.
Will Gardner's death was obviously something that we couldn't hamper from happening, for actor Josh Charles, who has effectively portrayed the character ever since the show began, is now exiting the show for good. His character's death came at a time when the hit show was reconstructing the storyline for Alicia (Julianna Margulies), who at the start of the season, departed from Lockhart Gardner with Cary Agos (Matt Czuchry) to establish their own firm, Florrick-Agos. According to TVLine, Will Gardner's 'Good Wife' death/exit was already expected to happen since Charles had formally told the producers of the show that he was departing from the series at the end of season 4, the time when his contract was already up. Fortunately, the creators, including lead actress Julianna Margulies, managed to convince Josh Charles to appear on the fifth season, so that the writers can come up with an exit plan for his character.
On the actor's part, he has already made up his mind in exiting the show. "Creatively, I was just ready to move on to the next chapter," Charles told TVLine. "You just kind of know sometimes when you're ready to move on to new experiences." The actor is expected to make a guest appearance on "Late Show with David Letterman" tonight, and JobsnHire claims that he is going to talk more about his decision to leave the show during his guesting. Meanwhile, in his Twitter account, he already echoed his gratitude to all the fans, who supported his character and the show. "Sending out all my love to #TheGoodWife fans! Playing Will Gardner was an honor and a pleasure. Thanks for all of your support & kind words!" Additionally, when show creators, Michelle and Robert King, tweeted about Charles' departure, the actor was quick to respond with: "@GoodWifeWriters The pleasure has been all mine. I've learned so much working with both of you & I'm in awe of your talent & storytelling."
Meanwhile, show fans couldn't help but echo their grief over the unexpected death of the male lead actor of the show. Many of them took it to different social media sites and even to major news sites that reported about Will Gardner's death.
"The relationship between Will and Alicia was my favorite part of the series. Josh Charles is such a commanding character on this series and has important relationships with all of the other main characters. I'm not sure if the show can recover. It will not be the same for me!" a fan wrote at the Hollywood Reporter's poll on Will's unexpected death last Sunday night.
"I was shocked. He was half the reason I started watching. LOVE this show, but will really miss Will Gardner. Total shocker!" another one commented.
"I'M STILL TRAMUTIZED I DON'T KNOW HOW TO FEEL," a Kyle Bailey wrote.
"See how I named myself? Yup. Really quite upset. Especially the experience if having this build up for something, and then getting so disappointed. It felt mean. Will really miss Will. But Alan Cummings, Carrie Preston and Christine B might just pull me back in once I'm done being angry..." a fan with an account name 'NotHappyAboutWillDying' said.
