Sarah Jones' death last month during a shoot of Midnight Rider came as a big blow to the cast and crew of the film. It is tragic and the accident has since called for safer film sets. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sarah Jones' death is now being investigated by local, state and federal authorities to try and find out who who is at fault for the untimely death.
So far, initial findings on Sarah Jones' death investigations have found out that a few industry safety guidelines were broken, resulting to the tragic incident.
During the Midnight Rider shoot, Jones and several crew members were prepping a scene on the tracks, when a train unexpectedly appeared. Some crew members injured whilst Jones got ultimately killed.
The Labor-Management Safety Committee industry guidelines ruled that productions should check with rail companies and local authorities before working on rail lines. When asked, rail lines owner CSX said they didn't give any permission to the Midnight Rider production to work on the lines. It turns out, the production team still pushed through with the shoot, and reports claim that there the crew were warned only 60 seconds before a train's approach, unfortunately leading to Sarah Jones' death.
The local Sheriff's department asked the film's executive producer beforehand if they were given permission by CSX, but the reply is just "that's complicated."
People who are supposedly responsible for the death have quickly put barriers around them to prevent any accusations from Sarah Jones' death.
Midnight Rider Director Randall Miller immediately put together a PR and law team to handle the consequences of the death. Nick Gant, who is the principal of the crew services company in charge of the shoot, claimed "no corners were cut" and even challenged CSX's claim. A Page Six report writes Gant making a callous remark about the death. He compared Sarah Jones' death to another woman's death by bikini wax, but immediately took down his post.
A memorial service was held Friday in West Hollywood, where Sarah Jones' father said "This is not the end, but rather the beginning of a movement for safer film sets ... there is no reason for another father to give you this talk."
Sarah Jones' Death is now being investigated by The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, along with local police. Let's hope the combined efforts of these institutions make the proper people responsible pay for the consequences of their actions.
