US Mint baseball coin to release this March 27, 2014 in recognition with the National Baseball Hall of Fame's 75th anniversary.
The US Mint baseball coin features a very distinct appearance since it is the first 'curved-coin' to be issued this month. The bowl- shaped currency is the result of National Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin Act which was signed on 2012 which mandates the U.S. Treasury to manufacture a coin that would honor the Hall of Fame in its 75th anniversary this year.
Denominations for these US Mint baseball coins are in $5 gold coins, $1 silver coins and half- dollar coins. These commemorative coins which will go on sale this March 27 are in varying prices, $35 for each gold coin, and $10 for silver coins and $5 for each half dollar coins. The profit that will be collected will be given to the National baseball Hall of Fame to help fund its operations.
US Mint baseball coin design was selected through a contest hosted by the Department of Treasury last September 4, 2013. Out of 178 designs, Cassie McFarland's work was chosen. The 28 year-old artist and photographer is the one responsible for the glove and ball design of the currency.
The design depicts a glove and is complimented with a baseball design in its reverse. It is the glove design that highlights the unique concave feature of the coin. The common inscriptions for the US Mint baseball coins common obverse are LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 2014. While on its reverse, inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM.
According to mint's website, McFarland stated that she was fascinated by the notion that America's coins reflect the history and personality of its people that is why she joined the competition.
The US Mint San Francisco facility will be the one responsible for manufacturing these curved commemorative coins.
