Shirley Temple: A cultural icon for decades

Shirley Temple Black's story behind her death.

The most famous child star during the1930s already passed away last February 10 at the age of 85 in her home in Woodside, California. The family previously announced that her death was due to "natural causes". However, recent reports revealed that the real cause of her death was due to her illness known as the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

Reports have said that Shirley Temple is actually a smoker for many years. The idea of smoking and her as a popular child star with a very good image is somewhat very contradicting. That is why, Temple through the years hide her habits in smoking because she doesn't want to be a bad example.

Her death certificate which was held at San Mateo County officially revealed the primary cause of her death which was pneumonia as a complication of her COPD.

Shirley Temple began her acting career and gained international fame on 1934. She starred in different hit movies such as the Curly Top and Heidi. Temple was a recipient of numerous honors and awards which includes the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award.

Aside from her acting career, she also became interested with politics. In 1967, she ran for Congress but was unable to win. However, it didn't become a hindrance to her dream in doing public service. It was in 1969 that she was appointed by President Nixon to the five-member United States delegation to the 24th session of the United Nations General Assembly. She was also appointed as an ambassador to Ghana in 1974.

Moreover, she remained a cultural icon for decades before finally steeping down from the big screen. She is a strong woman who successfully battled breast cancer in 1972.

"When I was 14, I was the oldest I ever was ... I've been getting younger ever since." - Shirley Temple.
