Samsung Galaxy S5 Vs Samsung Galaxy S4: Battle of Specs, Features & More! Is The Successor Better Than The Predecessor?

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is just around the corner, and surely Samsung fans are dying to grab their own unit of the latest flagship device from the famous Korean smartphone company. However, with all the hype over this next generation Galaxy S smartphone and given the fact that it's barely a year since the predecessor was released, is making that quick upgrade really necessary? Does it really imply that the successor is better than its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S4? Let's take a look at the four-one-one of both devices to find out.

While the usual premise for every next generation smartphone release is more improved hardware and software, we can't really say the same for the Samsung Galaxy S5. Yet, it is still very notable that Samsung made significant upgrades feature and specs-wise. The Samsung Galaxy S5 runs a quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor, which is clocked at 2.5GHz. On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy S4 sports a quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor clocked at 2.0 GHz. Hence, it is undeniable that the S5 is faster than its predecessor performance-wise.

Additionally, multitasking is more efficient in the Samsung Galaxy S5, all thanks to its extra RAM. The all-new Samsung Galaxy S installment comes with 3 gigs of RAM while the Samsung Galaxy S4 has a decent 2GB of RAM. Nevertheless, both generations come in similar internal storage variants with the favorable option of memory expansion via microSD.

When talking about display, it is not surprising, many may have speculated that the Samsung Galaxy S5 will come in a much bigger display. But it'd a good thing that Samsung has only expanded the display of the device to 5.1-inch - big enough to give it distinction from its predecessor but small enough not to cross that Galaxy Note series' borderline. What's good about the Samsung Galaxy S5 is the increased pixel density on its screen. The 5.1-inch 1080p display of the S5 is richer in detail because of its 432ppi as opposed to the 441ppi of the Samsung Galaxy S4.

Now, if you are a die-hard fan of long-running smartphones that pack in extremely long fuel, the Samsung Galaxy S5 may not be on the top of your option list, but it has managed to outplay its predecessor's 2,300 mAh battery with its 2,800 mAh battery.

Camera technology for both installments are obviously far from mediocre. The Samsung Galaxy S4 sports a 13MP shooter while the Samsung Galaxy S5 comes with a 16MP rear-facing camera. Camera specs and features are almost the same for the two, except the additional feats found on the S5 such as the fast auto-focus, HDR capabilities, and 4K video recording option.

When it comes to software and OS, the two flagship devices of the Samsung Galaxy S series technically run the same operating system after Samsung released the Android KitKat update for its Galaxy S4. However, the main difference, one will see right away is the disparate TouchWiz UI that runs on top of their Android 4.4 software. Unfortunately, fans will not really like the fact that the Galaxy S5's Touwchiz is a major bloatware that eats up 10GB of the 16GB memory of its base model.

Given all the minimal upgrade on each facet of the Samsung Galaxy S4, we are not really convinced that the successor - the Samsung Galaxy S5 - is much better than the predecessor. However, if you are the type who simply wants to get that next generation upgrade for the sake of having one, then the Galaxy S5 can definitely satisfy your craving.
