First World Problems: Climate Change May Nab Guacamole from Chipotle's Menu

It's a sad day indeed. Climate change deniers will no doubt be repenting for their misguided refusal of the warming climate and its immenent impact on life as we know it. In their annual report, the popular burrito chain Chipotle announced that drought and unpredictable weather may lead them to remove some items from their menu.

"Weather-related issues, such as freezes or drought, may also lead to temporary spikes in the prices of some ingredients." For instance, two years of drought conditions in parts of the U.S. have resulted in significant increases in beef prices during late 2013 and early 2014. In the event of cost increases with respect to one or more of our raw ingredients, we may choose to temporarily suspend serving menu items, such as guacamole or one or more of our salsas." reads Chipotle's annual report.

This is a big announcement. According to ThinkProgress.org, the company uses, on average, 97,000 pounds of avocado every day to make its guac - which adds up to 35.4 million pounds of avocados every year.

Chipotle's mission is to make people rethink fast food, their report states: "As part of our Food With Integrity philosophy, we believe that purchasing fresh ingredients and preparing them by hand are not enough, so we spend time on farms and in the field to understand where our food comes from and how it is raised."

For a company as large as Chipotle — there are 1,595 locations with an additional 195 for 2014 — to have a staunch dedication to the health of their food systems is remarkable.
