What's the fattest state in America? Mississippi. At least that's the most recent Gallup poll says. Mississippi was found to the be state with the highest obesity rate while Montana has the lowest.
In the Gallup poll, Montana bumped Colorado out of the top spot for the least obese state while Mississippi pushed West Virginia out of its top spot as the most obese. Mississippi's obesity rate was 35.4 percent in 2013 while Montana had a rate of 19.6 percent, making it the only states with a obesity rate less than 20 percent.
The national obesity rate increased from last year. It was at 26.2 percent in 2012 and rose to 27.1 percent in 2013.
The states with the 10 highest obesity rates also showed to have higher rates of chronic disease. For instance, among the 10 most obese state, 35.8 percent had high blood pressure while the least obese states had a 26.4 percent high blood pressure rate. In the fattest states, 28.2 percent had high cholesterol while 23.2 percent had it in the least obese states.
Those in the states with the lowest obesity rates said they tend to exercise more and eat healthy. For instance, in the 10 least obese states, 66.7 percent of people said they ate healthy all day on the previous day, while only 60.8 percent of people said the same in the 10 most obese states.
