Mayweather is scheduled to face Maidana later this year, though no official announcement on the date has been made.
The American defended his decision, saying Maidana has performed well in his previous bouts whereas Khan is 2-2 in his last four outings.
However, Mayweather offered Khan a shot at him if the Bolton, England native wins in a match against Adrien Broner. A Khan-Broner fight will be featured as an undercard event if both sides come to an agreement.
Mayweather described Maidana as a difficult fight, since the Argentine "gives it his all" when he fights.
Khan felt he was the perfect choice for Mayweather, stating he bested Maidana in a unanimous decision victory back in 2010. Furthermore, Khan argued that Maidana pummelled twice to the mat en route to unanimous victory, which netted Maidana the WBA welterweight crown.
Mayweather has been accused of cherry picking easy opponents for the past years as his means to remain unbeaten. Boxing fans and experts alike have called for him to face Manny Pacquiao in what could have been boxing's biggest even since Mayweather fought Oscar dela Hoya back in 2007.
Pacquiao was visibly eager to fight. Mayweather on the other hand, has been allegedly trying to avoid Pacquiao by pricing himself off or introducing unconventional drug testing procedures.
It came to a point where Mayweather openly accused Pacquiao of using performance enhancers, to which the Filipino retaliated by filing lawsuits against Mayweather and his team.
However, the potential Pacquiao-Mayweather super fight has lost its appeal as Pacquiao suffered two defeats in a row in 2012.
