For all women out there, this may be more important than you think, so read on.
According to a recent study published in the British Journal of Cancer, coffee intake is connected to women's breast size.
The 2008 study went viral as it revealed that coffee may have a tendency to "shrink" lady lumps. However, this doesn't mean that ladies have to stop altogether drinking their cup of joe. Drinking more coffee might also just save your breasts, and your life.
The reason behind all of it is an enzyme that is related to both coffee and estrogen metabolism in some women, specifically those born with a specific variant of the CYP1A2*1F gene.
For the study, a group of Swedish doctors led by Helena Jernstrom examined the connection between caffeine and breast size in 269 women with the specific enzyme.
They found out that even if coffee decreased these women's breast size, it also decreased the risk of them losing their breasts altogether.
Coffee contains compounds which influences hormone activity, such as phytoestrogens - capable of blocking estrogen receptors in breasts.
Estrogen, a hormone that regulates breast tissue growth and development, cannot do its job due to coffee.
Coffee metabolism is correlated to an enzyme regulated by the CYP1A2 gene, so female coffee lovers carrying this gene will have a "weak form" of estrogen. And weaker estrogen leads to smaller breast size.
This revelation is most seen in women who drink at least three cups of coffee a day. The more coffee they drink, the smaller their breasts.
But, don't fret ladies, for though you won't generally fit into the usual mold of society's sexy, research says that even if coffee may influence your bra size, its effect on your breasts may actually lower the risk for breast cancer.
A bigger chest comes with a bigger price so it seems. It can increase your chances of having breast cancer in the future. The density of breast tissue density involves higher risk for breast cancer.
This was proven in a study involving over 600 women published in Cancer Causes and Control. Smaller breasts leads to lowers levels of 16α-OHE1, a hormone known to contribute to estrogen-negative breast cancer. Estrogen-negative breast cancer has fewer treatment options.
So ladies, you don't have to throw away your coffee to solve your breast issues. Just enjoy your cup of joe and have less risk of losing your breasts altogether because of cancer.
