Social Media- Ending This Trending Topic to See Bigger Trend

Tweets and Nika storm hash tags flooded newsfeeds and instantly became a trending topic on social media platforms. Thick ice, tree branches, and disconnected wires covered the streets, which became obvious with the help of Instagram and Tumblr. Can we no longer look out our windows and see the glistening snow for ourselves? Do we now trust that our friends only miles away can put an effect on the weather and make it look even more compelling? Why do we text and tell our parents that we are ok and update our Facebook statuses with the latest road conditions while we are driving through the blizzards? Why do we see and hear about issues via social media and still fail to do anything about them?

Although tweets and photos certainly catch the attention of so many, Nika posed a real problem for some over the past few days. They were cold and their families were cold. They did not have anywhere else to go and may not have even been aware of the warming shelters around the area. What can we do for those who never have to place to go, especially during the winter season?

A 2012 study revealed that over 12,000 people had experienced homelessness in Philadelphia. Projecthome.org offers solutions that will help end homelessness: Strengthen homelessness prevention programs; strengthen the system of shelter that enables homeless persons to make the transition to stability and job readiness etc. Although these are answers to a major conflict all around the world, they are not easy fixes. So, what can we do?

Put down our phones and see what is really going on around us. People always need tissues, socks, gloves, hats, coats, and water. These necessities are often cheap or usually around our own homes. Donate old clothing you will never wear and food you will never eat. People do volunteer and take small groups to places like Philadelphia to hand out bags of essentials to those who are in need. And, although we cannot end homelessness this way, we can make a difference-we can help end this trend.
