Fans of the Seattle Seahawks should feel pretty good about their team's chances to come out on top during Sunday's Super Bowl after an ape at a Utah zoo picked the Seahawks to defeat the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII.
Eli, a 13-year old ape at Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City, made his Super Bowl selection Thursday by knocking over a papier-mache helmet displaying the logo of the NFC champion Seahawks, zoo official Erica Hansen told the Associated Press. She said Eli made his selection "without any hesitation" as the primate looks to correctly pick the winner of the Super Bowl for the seventh-straight year.
Eli hasn't made an incorrect Super Bowl pick since 2006, and Hansen said interest in the ape's selection has grown along with his streak of correct prognostications.
"He's better than the Vegas odds makers," Hansen said in an interview with the Associated Press.
This year Eli was presented with two papier-mache helmets, one each displaying the logo of the Seahawks and AFC champion Broncos. The first helmet he touched became his Super Bowl pick, and Eli charged into an enclosure toward the helmet with the logo of the Seahawks.
A year ago for Super Bowl XLVII, Eli was presented with papier-mache goal posts emblazoned with the logos of the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers. He charged toward the goal post with the Ravens logo, and Baltimore went on to win its second Super Bowl in franchise history with a 34-31 decision over the 49ers.
Eli's most recent incorrect Super Bowl selection was in 2006 when the ape selected the Seahawks to defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XL. The Steelers went on to win the game 21-10.
Bronco fans, including staff members who tend to Eli at Hogle Zoo, are hoping the prognosticating primate's Seahawk selection turns out wrong this time too.
