Scarlett Johansson has stepped down from her post as an ambassador for the British charity Oxfam due to a political conflict with her new job as a spokesperson for SodaStream, an Israeli company that has manufacturing facilities in an occupied section of the West Bank.
Johansson released a statement saying she stepped down from her Oxfam role because of a difference of political opinions with the organization, according to CBS News.
"Scarlett Johansson has respectfully decided to end her ambassador role with Oxfam after eight years. She and Oxfam have a fundamental difference of opinion in regards to the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement. She is very proud of her accomplishments and fundraising efforts during her tenure with Oxfam."
Oxfam responded, telling Reuters, "Oxfam believes that businesses, such as SodaStream, that operate in settlements further the ongoing poverty and denial of rights of the Palestinian communities that we work to support."
The controversy has been brewing since last week. Johansson was criticized for teaming up with SodaStream, due to the company's apparent ignoring of the tension it is creating by being an Israel-based company operating a large production facility in the West Bank. Johansson responded to the criticism by saying she is a "supporter of economic cooperation and social interaction between a democratic Israel and Palestine," according to CBS News.
Israel's settlements in the West Bank are illegal, according to international law, and Oxfam does extensive work in the region to assist those affected by the political conflict, according to Reuters. That difference of opinion caused Oxfam to reevaluate Johansson's position.
Johansson has reportedly signed a multi-million dollar deal to be SodaStream International Ltd.'s first global ambassador. The actress is set to appear in a SodaStream that is scheduled to be broadcast during this year's Super Bowl.
Johansson had been an ambassador for Oxfam since 2007.
