Apple iPhone 5S Vs. Samsung Galaxy S4: Head-to-Head Battle of Best Specs, Features & More!

The Apple iPhone 5s is Apple's most advanced and latest installment for its iPhone handsets. The same is true with the Samsung Galaxy S4, which is also known for being Samsung's latest installment for its Samsung Galaxy S series. Although these two devices are obviously very different from each other, we're sure that many people want to know how one fare with the other. Hence, we came up with this comparative review on the best specs and features of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Apple iPhone 5s. Read on to find out which device could most likely satisfy your wants and needs between these two.

Apple iPhone 5S over Samsung Galaxy S4

While the iPhone 5s retains the over-all look of the iPhone 5 in full detail, the Samsung Galaxy S4 follows the same style of its Galaxy S predecessors with obvious changes on the shape and size of the handset. The Samsung device even uses the same glossy plastic casing, which most if not all Samsung smartphones and tablets sport. Although we don't have any problem with the plastic material, we feel that the Apple iPhone 5s exudes the sturdier build with its metallic construction. Furthermore, the Apple handset radiates the premium look and feel to the hands. But personal preference between the materials used in these two smartphones could always be the deciding factor for this round.

In terms of interface and functionality, we'd like to hand this round to the Apple iPhone 5s. The new iOS 7, an upgrade to the previous version of iOS is simply stunning, detail-rich, and very minimalistic in every way. The TouchWiz Nature UX present in the Samsung device, which is basically running on top of the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean software, may be very presentable and delightful to the eye, its cartoony antics do not really match the sophisticated design and interface of the iOS 7 in the Apple iPhone 5S. Nevertheless, we can't deny the fact that the Galaxy S4 offers more personalization options such as the use of widgets and whatnot as opposed to the simplistic look and interface of the Apple iPhone 5s.

Performance between these two devices is snappier than their predecessors, but we'd like to give this round to the Apple iPhone 5s, which sports a dual-core 1.3 GHz A7 processor that runs on 64-bit technology. In contrast, the Samsung Galaxy S4 has a quad-core 1.9 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor. Despite the obvious advantage in the greater number of cores present in the Samsung handset, the Apple iPhone 5s' unique processing architecture is one that is hard to beat. According to Phone Arena's benchmarking of the two devices, the Apple iPhone 5s scored better in all of the tests including Sunspider, Mozilla Kraken, and GFXBench T-Rex HD Off-Screen.

Samsung Galaxy S4 over Apple iPhone 5s

There is an obvious size difference between these two devices. While the Apple iPhone 5s rocks the 4-incher entry level with its 4-inch 640 x 1136 Retina Display, the Samsung Galaxy S4 packs in a 5-inch 1080 x 1920 Super AMOLED display. One may say that the Samsung Galaxy S4's display is unmatched in terms of quality, there isn't actually any obvious difference between the display quality of the two when you put them side-by-side. This is because the screen resolution of the iPhone 5s works well with its smaller frame. Placing them in a darkly-lit room however can reveal right away that the Samsung device has cool, rich and vibrant color reproduction compared to the other handset. What's more is that we prefer the 5-inch display of the Samsung Galaxy S4 over the 4-incher of the Apple iPhone 5S since the bigger screen equates to better viewing of videos and photos, enhanced browsing and navigating of online sites, as well as for a much favorable gaming experience.

Multitasking is one of the features many people today look for in a smartphone. In comparing these two devices, there is no denying that the Samsung Galaxy S4 handles multitasking better than the Apple iPhone 5s. For one thing, the larger screen in this handset does a fine job in running two apps at the same time with its multi-screen feature.

Memory has always been an issue with Apple devices, but it seems the company does not plan to incorporate external memory to its devices any time soon. Hence, the Apple iPhone 5s is stuck with its internal storage capacity variants: 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. On the other hand, every model of the Samsung Galaxy S4 - even its 16GB base model - comes with the very practical expansion slot for additional storage.

When it comes to camera technology, we all know that Samsung has always been very eager to match other smartphone companies that are leading in this aspect such as Sony and Nokia. Hence, it is not surprising why the camera technology the Samsung Galaxy S4 sports is more impressive than that of the Apple iPhone 5s, which is very limited in terms of camera tricks and feats. Additionally, the 8MP shooter of the iPhone 5s is no match with the Galaxy S4's 13MP camera. Photos appear crisp, fine, and very much accentuated in the Samsung Galaxy S4 in both low and good lighting areas.

Finally, battery life speaks volumes for these two handsets. Although they sport very different batteries, the Samsung Galaxy S4's bigger form is properly compensated by its also quite large battery size. Nonetheless, the device still needs charging after less than one day of use. On the contrary, the Apple iPhone 5s' battery is just perfect for its smaller build, but is also easily consumed within a day. Thus, we can't really tell the difference on the longevity between the two. However, given the fact that the battery in the Samsung Galaxy S4 needs to power a bigger device, it is quite impressive to note that it is very competent when it comes to delivering a decent fuel to the handset, enough to match that of the Apple iPhone 5s battery life.
