LINK Makes a Difference for North Korea

At this time there are 24 million people who are oppressed by their government. These people have no way of making a living and are forced to live in poverty. Many of these people are malnourished and are lucky to eat a small meal once a day.

For these people freedom and human rights are basically nonexistent. Breaking the rules could mean they are sent to a prison camp where they are tortured, forced to work, or even executed for their actions. The leaders of this country keep any outside information from crossing its borders. It is illegal to watch foreign television, listen to foreign radio, and possess any kind of foreign technology. Life is terrible for these people but their hopes of leaving this country are very slim. It is illegal to leave this country. Despite the danger there are a few who are brave and desperate enough to try to escape.Luckily, there are a few who are able to escape from this country's control and are now trying to help those who are still trapped. By helping those on the inside, there is hope that this terrible regime will be brought down and the people of this country can be free. This country is none other than North Korea.

Kim Jong Un is completely focused on keeping his regime alive. The leaders of the North are so focused on this that they put all their money into the military. They keep the North Korean people in the dark so that uprisings to remove Kim Jong Un and the other leaders from power will not happen. There are a few who have seen past the lies of the government and have escaped from North Korea into China in hopes of a better future. The power of the regime is weakening and the country is changing from the inside.

Liberty in North Korea (LINK) has emerged as a force and a helping hand to these people. This organization's headquarters are in Torrance, Calif. and it also has a branch office in Seoul, South Korea. The mission of LINK is to rescue North Korean refugees, who escape into China and help them make it to South Korea where they can be rehabilitated. Then LINK provides them with means to succeed in their new lives, and to help them make a difference in North Korea.

LINK is also helping to spread the word about the situation in North Korea. Every year LINK offers the opportunity for an internship in California. The participants are known as Nomads. They are responsible for getting the word out about LINK's mission and struggles of the North Korean people.

"We visited middle and high schools, colleges, religious institutions, and companies including Google Headquarters to show our documentary about the North Korean crisis and inspire people to get involved to support the North Korean people," said Jihyun Roh who was a Nomad and is now a Resettlement Coordinator in Seoul.

His team saw so many people who were shocked to learn what was going on in North Korea and were inspired to know that the North Korean people were making positive changes to overcome all the obstacles in and outside of their country. "It was so awesome talking to the people on the road about the North Korea crisis and how the North Korean people were struggling and overcoming so many obstacles such as starvation, human rights abuses and political oppression," said Roh.Normally the Nomad teams travel to many parts of California.

However, this spring the Nomads from LINK are doing something different. Instead of just going to locations in California, they will tour the United States, holding events in at least 10 different locations throughout the country. The locations and dates for the events can be found on LINK's website. If you see that there is no event held in your area, there is an option to request one.

So if you are interested in bringing LINK to your area and finding out how to help the North Korean people please go to their website atwww.libertyinnorthkorea.org.
