In other parts of the country, an oddball quinquagenarian multimillionaire marrying a relatively unheard-of actress 23 years his senior would raise some eyebrows. In Hollywood, it merely raises shoulders in the form of a so-what shrug.
Reclusive superstar Johnny Depp, 50, has gotten engaged to Amber Heard, a 27-year-old beauty whose most noticed works include "Pineapple Express" and "The Rum Diary," in which she played Depp's love interest. The couple apparently wasn't acting. Depp had most recently spent 14 unmarried years with French singer and actress Vanessa Paradis, who birthed Depp's two daughters -- Lily Rose, 14, and Jack, 11. Heard's last love interest was a woman, photographer Tasya Van Ree. Heard identified herself as a bi-sexual in an interview with Playboy magazine in 2011.
"In the past I've had successful relationships with men, and now I'm in this successful relationship with a woman," she said at the time. "When it comes to love I am totally open."
According to celebrity gossip website Celebuzz, the "Pirates of the Caribbean" star reportedly proposed on Christmas Eve, but Heard didn't say yes right away. The two officially stepped out together for the Art of Elysium's 7th Heaven Gala at Skirball Cultural Center earlier this month, but Heard wasn't wearing the ring then, nor at the Golden Globe Awards the next day.
Before the engaged couple walk down the aisle, they'll be sauntering down the red carpet once more, hitting the big screen together in the upcoming crime thriller London Fields, which stars Heard in a leading role and features a cameo from Depp, as well as Billy Bob Thornton and Jim Sturgess. The film set to be released later this year.
