Police officials have finally caught a break in the identity theft crisis that struck Target retail stores over the holidays. According to reports from police officials, the two individuals were arrested in South Texas as they attempted to enter the United State from Mexico.
In conjunction with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, police officials were able to conduct a successful investigation. The results led to arrest warrants being obtained for the two suspects by the McAllen Police Department, according to Chief Victor Rodriguez. Therefore, Mary Garcia, 27, and Daniel Dominguez, 28, were stopped and taken into custody immediately once they came across the Anzalduas International Bridge.
The arrest charges were in relation to the Target retail store identity thefts of consumer personal information. Officials reported that the suspects had in possession 96 fake credit cards. It is their belief that the credit cards were made with personal information they obtained through the security breach at Target.
The police officials were not successful in apprehending the suspects before they had time to use the credit cards. Rodriguez stated that the two were able to purchase merchandise from major retail chains that amounted to tens of thousands of dollars. The purchases were made using the identity of South Texas residents.
The investigators stated that the suspects were a part of the initial thievery of the account information from Target as well as creating the fraudulent cards. However, it is suspected that they are related to a much wider scheme. The two had been specifically shopping on Sundays because banks would most likely be slow in catching up to their activities.
