Climate Change Issue Need More Air Time On Television News

An analysis report released by the media watchdog group Media Matters on Jan. 16 suggests that in 2013 Climate change got more air time on telecast news as compared to past few years. Although the issue has grabbed maximum attention in 2009, the last year was quite progressive.

News channels including; ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox aired more coverage on the climate change in 2013 than they featured in 2012. The Media Matters report estimated overall coverage of climate change lackadaisical. The report noted there were several news events in 2013 that produced prospects for reporting, including:

1. In May, carbon dioxide levels exceeded by 400 parts per million
2. In June, climate policy addressed by President Barack Obama
3. In September, the release of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change assessment

In 2009, the year of the Copenhagen climate summit was held, the media coverage peaked and kept on reducing till 2012 and then increased in 2013. While "Fox News Sunday" granted the issue more air time, for 16 minutes coverage of "Face the Nation" to climate throughout the year, CBS won the gold medal. The report notes that "Face the Nation" was the first Sunday show in five years to feature scientists discussing climate change, with the eminent climatologist like Heidi Cullen and also interviewed scientist Dr. J. Marshall Shepherd in a May. 28 episode.

On Jan. 16, a letter citing findings from Media Matters analysis written by Sen.
