Delta has new seats coming to its planes. Delta Air Lines is planning to install the new seats and bigger overhead bins on more than 225 planes.
Delta will be trying to squeeze more seats on to many of its planes, but they will also come with some cool perks. The project will be completed in 225 planes and every seat will have electrical power. Many of the planes will get bigger overhead bins as well to accommodate for the high amount of carry-on luggage, the Associated Press reports.
Delta says that many planes will have more seats. For instance, the Boeing 757-200s will have 19 more seats. The Airbus A319s will have six more seats and the A320s will have 10 more seats.
How will the planes magically have the space for these seats? The seats are getting smaller. The airline will be using "slim line" seats which will have a smaller, lighter-weight frame from the front to back. More space will also be made in the kitchen area. The galleys on the 757s will soon take up less space. In addition to this, some of the 757s will have fewer seats in business-class which will allow for more room in coach.
Legroom on the planes isn't expected to change from what it is now according to Delta Air Lines Inc. spokesman Paul Skrbec said. Even though the seats are expected to be smaller, Skrbec says on the Airbus planes, they will be slightly wider.
The Atlanta-based airline will also overhaul the interior of its Boeing 737-800s, but no extra seats will be added to those planes.
Delta's fleet of 757s include planes that it has always owned as well as planes that it obtained when it took over Northwest Airlines in 2008. The remodeling project will ensure that the interior of all the planes look the same. The three-year project, which costs $770 million, will begin this winter and continue into 2016.
