On December 3 last year, Ashley Boyle brought her 3-year old daughter, Finley to the dentist for a four-root canal procedure. What follows is a series of tragic events that left the family distraught beyond belief.
The 3-year old girl went became brain dead from a supposed dental procedure and was declared dead Friday night in a statement released by her family, "It is with heavy hearts that we announce that at 8:47 p.m. last night, Finley Boyle passed away with her family at her side."
Finley was brought to Island Dentistry, Kailua to see Dr. Lily Geyer. She was then given a series of heavy sedatives, including Demerol, a strong opioid analgesic. Twenty-six minutes later, the 3-year old girl went into cardiac arrest. According to a report by KHON2, the little girl was not given immediate CPR.
The parents immediately sued the clinic and the lawsuit that was filed against Dr. Lily Geyer says that the staff was not ready for such kind of procedure and the parents, along with other could not believe that such heavy drugs were given to a child that size.
In fact, reports say that the staff was so frantic and unprepared that they had to run to the pediatrician down the hall for help. Rick Fried, the Boyle family's attorney says that the incident could have been prevented if the staff had monitored Finley's vital signs throughout the procedure.
Fried says to Hawaii News Now, "We're just shocked that these drugs, in these doses, in this combination, could be given to a child of this size."
Throughout the 3-year old's stay in the hospital, a fundraising page was raised for her and her family stayed by her side, singing to her, talking to her and plyaing music all day for her.
Finley's mother who was a registered nurse says, "She will probably not be with us much longer. We were all hoping. Even the doctors are in tears. We were all just waiting for her to wake up."
After Finely died, the statement was posted on a Facebook group dedicated to Finley, saying: "Thank you for your continued concern, prayers and generosity. The outpouring of love from far and wide has touched the family hearts in the hardest of times. Finley went home on hospice and is resting with her family. Continue to pray for peace and serenity for Finley and the family."
