A German man was tied up by the flight crew on an Emirates flight after he tried to smoke on board.
Mathias Jorg, a 54-year-old German national, was on flight EK435 from Singapore to Brisbane Airport on Thursday when he tried to smoke several times. He was detained by the staff after he became violent and aggressive towards them when they tried to stop him from lighting up, the Courier Mail reports.
A photograph taken by another passenger shows Jorg restrained in a seat with his legs bound and his arms appear to be tied.
When the Boing 777 landed in Brisbane, the flight staff alerted authorities. Jorg appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday. He was charged by Australian Federal Police with one count of of smoking on an aircraft, one count of assaulting crew and one count of assaulting crew affecting the performance of their duty, the Courier Mail reports.
According to magistrate Stephen Gutridge, Jorg would be given bail on the condition that he surrender his passport to the Australian Federal Police and he wouldn't apply for another. He is not allowed to leave Australia or go within 100 meters of an airport or other international transportation facility. He objected to these conditions when they were translated to him in German. Jorg said he didn't trust the conditions. He also added that his wrist was damaged, but he wouldn't say how it happened. He had sticky plaster on his wrist and a bruised forehead.
When Jorg was told that he wouldn't receive bail unless he gave up his passport, he eventually said he'd be happy to surrender it. He would not answer any questions to reporters when he left the Brisband Watchhouse.
Jorg is set to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court again on January 10.
