7-time Formula 1 champion driver Michael Schumacher sustained a serious head injury and is now being treated at a French Hospital after a freak accident in the French Alps.
Schumacher was reportedly skiing with his son last Sunday when he fell and hit his head against a rock. The 44-year old pro driver was wearing a helmet the entire time. The accident happened in a Meribel ski resort where Schumacher had a chalet.
Christophe Gernignon-Lecomte, the director of the resort states that two ski patrollers immediately requested for a helicopter for the world champion to be airlifted to the nearest hospital. He was then moved to a larger facility in Grenoble where he is currently accompanied by his wife and two children.
"Mr Schumacher was admitted to the University Hospital of Grenoble at 12:40, following a skiing accident which occurred in Meribel in the late morning," the Grenoble hospital reports in a statement and continues, "He suffered a severe head injury with coma on arrival, which required immediate neurosurgical intervention. He remains in a critical situation." The hospital refused to comment further.
Early reports were made of the skiing accident, saying that the injury was not life threatening and that Schumacher will walk away from it simply shaken. Experts are saying that the pro F1 driver may have had his head swollen from the accident and required immediate surgery to help relieve the swelling.
Other F1 drivers were stunned by the news, others taking to Twitter in expressing their support for Schumacher. "Come on Michael, give us one of those race stints at pure qualifying pace to win through, like you used to. You can do it," tweeted Martin Brundle, ex-F1 driver and Schumacher's former teammate.
The world-renowed German driver won seven championships and a total of 91 race wins over a span of 19 years. He retired 2006 when he was in a serious motorcycle accident and decided to make a comeback in 2010.
