The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and the Nokia Lumia 1520 are the leading phablets for this year. And if you are planning to buy your very own phablet to start the year 2014 right, then it's very likely that you are also caught in between Samsung and Nokia's flagship monster-sized smartphones. So here is a quick rundown of the best specs and features of these two and how they scored compared to the other.
Samsung Galaxy Note 3 over Nokia Lumia 1520
Samsung's latest instalment for its Note series has a 5.7" display, just a tad smaller than the Lumia 1520's 6" screen. However, what's good about the relatively smaller screen is it packs in more pixels. Although both phones come in 1080x1920 screen resolution, Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has the advantage of packing 386 ppi into its screen while Nokia's Lumia 1520 comes with a pixel density of 368 ppi. Nevertheless, in reality, you can't really tell the difference except when you put them side-by-side in a dark room.
The relatively smaller build of the Note 3 also has the added advantage of weighing less than the Windows phone phablet. It weighs 5.93 oz or 168 grams. Meanwhile, the Nokia Lumia 1520 weighs a bit more at 7.37 oz or 209 grams.
When it comes to camera technology, it's obvious that Nokia Lumia 1520's 20MP shooter is way better than that of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 which is basically a 13MP shooter. What's good about Samsung's camera though is what it lacks on the pixels, it makes up for the number of integrated camera feats.
Finally, one feature that makes Samsung Galaxy Note 3 stand out from other Android devices is the fact that it comes with one of the latest Android OS versions, 4.3. And we all know that the Android market still has a lot to offer compared to the Windows app store.
Nokia Lumia 1520 over Samsung Galaxy Note 3
The Nokia Lumia 1520 may be the first ever phablet from the Finnish company, but this device has a lot of second-to-none feats that speak volumes in many ways than one. First, is of course the beautiful 6" IPS LCD display which is also one of the best in the market today.
The second most striking feature of the Nokia Lumia 1520 is its 20MP shooter which comes with a dual LED flash as opposed to Samsung's single LED. Clearly, Nokia is taking advantage of its PureView technology which makes the Lumia 1520's camera a competitive tool for everyday and even for professional use.
Both devices sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset and an Adreno 330 graphics processor. And although the Lumia 1520 only has a quad-core 2200 MHz processor and 2GB of RAM compared to Samsung Galaxy Note 3's quad-core 2300 MHz processor and 3GB of RAM, we are still giving this round to Nokia's monster Windows phone. For one thing, the Windows Phone OS does not actually need a lot of RAM in order for it to handle tasks efficiently. On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 needs not only that extra RAM but as well as the extra GB of memory to cater to its own demands and those of the user. Samsung's TouchWiz UI alone takes up a lot of RAM to begin with.
Finally, when it comes to battery life, the Nokia Lumia 1520 triumphs with its 3,400 mAh battery over Samsung Galaxy Note 3's 3,200 battery. Talk time using the Nokia phablet can go as long as 27.40 hours while using Samsung's phablet entails only 25 hours. As for their stand-by time, Nokia's Lumia 1520 can go for 32 days with just one full charge while Samsung's all-new Note can only last for up to 22 days in one full charge.
