Super Bowl 2014: Hotels Charge Extravagant Rates as High as 800% More Than Usual For Game Day Weekend in NYC and NJ

Those planning to be in New York City of New Jersey during Super Bowl 2014 can expect to pay much higher hotel prices than usual.

Catching a deal won't be easy for the Super Bowl as a new survey from CheapHotels.org shows that hotels in New York City, and in particular in New Jersey around the MetLife Stadium where the championship game will take place, are charging strongly higher rates than usual for the Super Bowl weekend of February 1-3, 2014.

Although many hotels are already booked for the big game, there are still rooms available at 40 percent of hotels in Manhattan still have rooms for the weekend. However the rooms won't be cheat. On average, these hotels are charging 139 percent more than usual for Super Bowl Weekend. That adds on to the fact that New York City had some of the highest hotel prices in the country on a typical day.

Even though 139 percent is the average, some hotels are charging even more than that. For instance, to stay in the 2-star Tribeca Blu Hotel, it will cost guests $1,200 per night just for a standard double room that weekend, which is 400 percent higher than usual.

Visitors will have a harder time trying to find a hotel room near the MetLife Stadium venue in New Jersey as only a handful are still available. The rates for what's left are also wildly overpriced. For instance, a standard double room usually goes for $94 per night at the Howard Johnson Inn in Clifton, but the rooms are listed at $900 per night for Super Bowl weekend. This represents an 800 percent increase.

Surprisingly, there are a few hotels in which rates haven't risen by too much. There are still limited rooms available for less than $200 per night in Manhattan or even under $150 per night for low-budget hotels with shared bathrooms.

"It is recommended that fans who have their hearts set on staying in NYC for the Super Bowl book now. Rates certainly won't fall as game day approaches," Barbara Adams from CheapHotels.org said in a press release. "We expect that hotels in Manhattan will be virtually sold out come the first weekend of February, with overnight rates in the $300 to $400 range for the most affordable double room being the anticipated norm."
