Heading to a warm, tropical destination from your cold, wintery hometown, and you just don't want to lug your big winter coat around on your trip? Some airports are trying to help passengers with this problem by offering a coat check at the airport.
According to Joe Sharkey of The New York Times, at least two airports offer a coat check for this who don't want to bring their jacket along.
One of the is Frankfurt Airport in Germany. The airport allows customers to check their coats at the airport before their flights. Travelers can pick up their coats when they return. The airport started giving fliers this option in 2012 as part of a holiday promotion. However the program was a hit and the airport is now expanding it.
"Because of the positive feedback, we started the special coat offer earlier this year," airport spokesman Robert A. Payne told the Times. "Previously, passengers didn't really think of checking their winter coats."
Frankfurt's service comes as a low fee. It costs half a euro per day, or about 67 cents per day.
Frankfurt isn't the only place where travelers can check their coats before boarding their flight. The service is also offered by Korean Air at its main hub at Incheon International Airport near Seoul.
Korean Air spokeswoman, Penny Pfaelzer, says the service has become popular among the airline's customers. "Who wants to lug a winter coast to Hawaii?" she told the Times. Korean Air doesn't charge to check coats. It is a free service for customers.
These services are convenient for travelers who are leaving a cold location and wear a winter coat to the airport and for those who are heading to a warm destination and don't want to bring the coat with them In many instances, people can solve this by driving to the airport and leaving their coat in the car but for many in Europe and Asia, public transportation is their only way to get to the airport.
