Swedish Ice Hotel Required to Install Fire Alarms

A hotel made completely out of ice wouldn't need fire alarms, right? Authorities in Sweden are requiring a famous ice hotel to install fire alarms.

The ice hotel, located in the small Arctic town of Jukkasjaervi, is rebuilt every winter as it's only made of ice. Authorities have requested that the hotel installs fire alarms for the safety of its guests so the hotel isn't fighting the request, AFP reports.

"We were a little surprised at first, but the reason is that there are things that can actually catch fire, like pillows, sleeping bags or reindeer skins," hotel spokeswoman Beatrice Karlsson told AFP. "To us the most important concern is the safety of our clients, so we will comply," she added.

The hotel will open this year on December 6 and will remain open until April 13. Prices start at ,900 kronor (212 euro, $285) for a single room and go up to 7,500 kronor ($1,127) for the most expensive suite in the hotel.

The ice hotel draws in tourists from all over the world. Guests can sleep on an ice bed in temperatures that dip to 18 degrees Fahrenheit or eight degrees Celsius.

The alarms were already tested last year by the local fire department. They have made construction of the hotel even more difficult as the makers had to take several factors into consideration.

"The environment is humid, and ice and snow... move, so it had to be taken into account," Karlsson said.

"It's been a challenge for our building team, but it made us one experience richer."
