Want to get drunk without drinking alcohol? A British scientist says he's found a drunk without alcohol pill and it doesn't even come with the hangover.
Professor David Nutt told the BBC that he has found the compounds that would give the sensation that alcohol does and one that would immediately reverse the effects, meaning sobriety it an instant! Nutt says that the pill would serve the purpose that e-cigarettes do for smoking. It would allow people to get drunk without the negative health effects and it would eliminate an addiction problem.
Nutt, a neuropsychopharmacologist at Imperial College London and former drugs advisor to the U.K. government, says the drug would be consumed as a cocktail and targets neurotransmitters in the brain to mimic the effects of being drunk.
The get drunk without alcohol pill could easily be reversed with an antidote which would allow users to sober up quickly, allowing them to drive or to continue with work.
"I've done the prototype experiments myself many years ago, where I've been inebriated and then it's been reversed by the antagonist," Nutt told the BBC. "That's what really gave us the idea. There's no question that you can produce a whole range of effects like alcohol by manipulating the brain."
The only problem is that Nutt doesn't have the funding for his idea quite yet.
"I think this would be a serious revolution in health ... just like the e-cigarette is going to revolutionize the smoking of tobacco," he said. "I find it weird that we haven't been speaking about this before, as it's such a target for health improvement."
