Thanksgiving flights come at a higher price this year. According to Travelocity, Thanksgiving flights are seven percent more than they were last year.
If you're planning on traveling for Thanksgiving, it is best to book now. Even though the holiday is still a few weeks away, the sooner you book, the better the deal. The average round-trip domestic airfare this Thanksgiving is $415, inclusive of tax, up nearly 7 percent from last year, according to Travelocity. The travel deal site says $415 is the price to beat when travelers look at prices for their holiday trips.
The good news is thats ome routes offer prices below $415. For instance, New York to South Florida is $375. Los Angeles to Dallas/ Fort Worth is $338. A flight from Chicago to New York is $365. It will cost travelers $382 for a flight from Denver to New York. A San Francisco to Los Angeles flight would set you back $192. A flight from Boston to Chicago should cost $369.
"While average airfare is up for Thanksgiving we are still seeing some of the most popular routes well under the national average," explains Courtney Scott, senior editor at Travelocity. "So if $415 is out of your price range, don't assume you can't make it home for the holidays. Check your route, be flexible on your dates and you can still find a great deal."
Although it is too late now, the best time to book Thanksgiving travel is before November 9 as prices tend to increase after. Those looking for a deal should be flexible with their travel dates. Those who plan to return on Friday, November 29 or Tuesday, December 3 will see lower fares. Another way to save money is by heading to the least popular airport. For instance, flying into JFK or Newark airport instead of LaGuardia in New York could lead to big savings.
It is advised to take an early flight as there are shorter security lines earlier in the day and planes have a better on-time performance earlier in the day. If an early flight in cancelled, there is always the option of taking a flight later in the day.
Only try to bring a carry-on in order to avoid checked baggage and overweight baggage fees. It is also easier to keep track of baggage in case a flight is cancelled due to bad weather or delays.
