The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees have been announced. Among the first-timers are Nirvana, Linda Ronstadt, Peter Gabriel, Hall and Oates, and The Replacements.
The 2014 hall of fame nominees have been announced. There were 16 nominees announced on Wednesday, with half of them being first-time picks. In addition to Nirvana, Linda Ronstadt, Peter Gabriel, Hall and Oates, and The Replacements, YES, Link Wray and The Zombies are also nominated for the first time, the Associated Press reports.
"I think it's remarkable in that there are so many first-time nominees," Greg Harris, Rock Hall president and CEO, told Cleveland's The Plain Dealer of the newest class of nominees. "It's remarkably diverse in the type of bands that are on it."
The nominees will be voted on by more than 600 people. The official inductees will be announced in December. A special ceremony will take place in New York in April. Those who want to see the ceremony can do so on HBO in April.
Nirvana's nomination is special as it is the first year that they are eligible. If they're chosen, they'll enter the hall of fame almost 20 years after lead-singer Kurt Cobain killed himself.
Nominee Ronstadt is nominated for the first time. She recently announced that she had Parkinson's. Fans have pushed for her to be added to the hall of fame for many years.
Some nominees are back on the list again including KISS, LL Cool J, N.W.A., Cat Stevens, Deep Purple, The Meters, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band and Chic. This is Chic's eighth nomination since 2003. KISS, LL Cool J and Stevens had been missing from the list for many years.
For the second year, fans will be able to vote as well as music experts who usually select the honorees. The top five will be inducted into the hall of fame.
