At least eight people are dead and an additional 80 are injured after a monster truck drove into the crowd of spectators at a monster truck show in Mexico over the weekend, according to the Associated Press. The accident took place at a Mexican air show.
The driver appeared to lose control of the truck after jumping over cars that it was crushing as part of a demonstration at the "Extreme Aeroshow" on Saturday, according to Carlos Gonzalez, the spokesman for the Chihuahua state prosecutors office, told the Associated Press.
Video was taken by a spectator that shows the truck passing over two cars in the air, making another jump at a faster speed, and then landing sharply nose-first causing the truck to bounce and land in the crowd, which was located directly in the path of the truck, without a wall or barrier of any kind to protect them.
The driver appeared to hit his head as he drove over the cars, and his helmet may have fallen off in the process, according to witnesses.
"I fell over, and when I turned around I saw the tire very close," Jesus Manuel Ibarra, who was treated for injuries to his arm and hip, said. "It hit me and threw me to the other side."
The accident resulted in the death of at least one child and injured 80 people, 46 of whom were still in the hospital as of Sunday. The names of 67 of the injured people were listed on the Facebook page for the local health system, as well as a request for blood donations and help from local doctors and nurses.
Prosecutors are looking into the possibility of a mechanical failure, resulting in a stuck gas pedal.
The air show was canceled after the accident. It occurred on the second day of a three-day show.
