Chicago Train Crash: Two Trains Collide, Injuring Dozens

A Chicago train crash left dozens of people injured on Monday.

Two commuter trains collided on Monday, resulting in several injuries. According to The Washington Post, 33 people were taken to nine hospitals in the Chicago area when an out-of-service Chicago Transit Authority train crashed head-on with another train stopped at a Forest Park, Ill., suburban station west of Chicago. CNN reports that as many as 48 people were injured and taken to local hospitals and the injuries are believed to be minor.

Police are investigating the possibility of someone hijacking an out-of-service CTA train and sent it colliding into the second train. The suspicion of foul play was raised as the out-of-service train had fewer cars than a normal rush-hour train does. It was also on the wrong tracks and nobody was at the controls when the collision occurred. However there doesn't seem to be any indication of criminal activity and the crash may have occurred due to a mechanical malfunction.

"We were stopped at Harlem and then we hear like a big boom sound and everyone started flying out of their seats," passenger Lyneisha Fields told the Washington Post.

The eastbound train was empty as it traveled along the same track as the full westbound train. The trains were running along the Blue Line from O'Hare International Airport to Forest Park. A section of one of the train cars was crushed like an according due to the crash.

The crash occurred at around 8 a.m. on Monday. Service along the line was shut down for several hours and the station where the crash occurred was closed even after service was restored. Shuttle buses were made available to those that needed to get near the area.
