A Chicago Park shooting has left 13 injured, including a toddler.
A three-year-old child is among the victims of the Thursday night shooting at a park on Chicago's south side. The child, who was shot in the ear, remains in critical condition, the Associated Press reports.
Gunfire erupted at around 10:15 on Thursday. Many of the victims had bullet wounds to their arms, legs and feed. Most of them are in their teens, 20s and 30s. One 24-year-old man is in serious condition as he was shot twice in the abdomen. All of the wounded were transported by ambulance to area hospitals.
No suspect has been killed and no one has been arrested as of early Friday.
"We believe that the motive for the shooting was gang-related," said Ron Gaines, a spokesman with the Chicago Police Department, according to AP. "At this point, detectives are out questioning witnesses trying to find out what happened."
One witness, Julian Harris, said that the shooters included dreadlocked men who shot at him before getting into a grey sedan and shooting people at Cornell Square Park. Harris said the three-year-old toddler is his nephew.
"They hit the light pole next to me, but I ducked down and ran into the house," Harris said. "They've been coming round here looking for people to shoot every night, just gang-banging stuff. It's what they do."
Another witness, Francis John, 70, was in her apartment when she heard the commotion. She went to see what was happening and said there were "a lot of youngsters were running scared." She has lived in the area for 30 years and said she hasn't seen much gun violence in recent years.
This shooting comes almost three weeks after 20 were injured and eight were killed during a violent Labor Day weekend.
Police are on high alert.
