Sara Bareilles has opened up about the controversy over Katy Perry stealing her song. Despite fans causing an uproar over Katy Perry's "Roar" sounding just like Bareilles' "Brave," Bareilles says she has no problem with and she that she and Perry are good friends.
Bareilles fans were very upset when Perry seemed to steal the same exact melody from Bareilles' song, "Brave," for her new single "Roar." Yet Bareilles enjoyed the uproar and said there's no beef between her and Perry.
"I was stoked. I was like, 'Great,'" the 33-year-old beauty said according to the Associated Press referring to the excessive internet gossip about how Perry stole her son "I was like, 'You guys want to go get (mad) about something and buy my music, that's great.'"
Bareilles could get mad at Perry's song is currently at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, while Bareilles' ballad peaked at No. 31. There is no doubt that the melody is similar and some have taken to make mashups of the two songs and some even layered "Roar" over "Brave" to show the similarities. "Brave" was released in April while "Roar" hit the radio in August, but Bareilles said nothing was stolen.
"I don't feel like anything was taken from me artistically," Bareilles said. "I wasn't the one having any problems with it."
The singer says that she is actually friends with Perry and the two have laughed off the rumors.
"I've known Katy a long time. We are friends and she and I spoke about it,"
she said. "I look at it as two female artists who are releasing a message of empowerment."
"We actually talked about it," she added. "We're like, 'Should we just work on a mash-up and let everybody know we're not mad at each other?'"
Many fans would approve.
