Los Angeles International Airport is undergoing a major renovation, according to USA Today. The first flight will into the newly renovated areas will arrive at the new terminal on Wednesday.
They said LAX was the worst because it had hold rooms that were tired and small, that it had terrible retail, that the lines were long, that it was crowded and that way finding was terrible," Curtis Fentress, the Architect and Principal-in-Charge of Design for the new tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT). "But now LAX has the best international terminal in the U.S., with wide generous spaces that are not dark and dingy but filled with daylight, lots of high-end retail and a signage system that offers entertainment as well as information."
The new building has a sloped rooftop designed to look like waves breaking on a beach. It has 1,179,000 square feet of usable space, which, according to the airport, is almost 40 percent larger that that of the U.S. Capital Building.
The Great Hall, which has been named after Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, contains 150,000 square feet with dining and retail, airline club lounges and other amenities passenger can take advantage of.
There are also 18 new boarding gates, with nine currently operational. They can accommodate larger aircraft including the A380 and the Boeing 747-8.
The gate hold areas have outlets at 50 percent of the seats. Some seats also offer footrests.
There are 10 shops located outside security and an additional 26 shops after security. They include Coach, Bulgari, Kitson LA and Victoria's Secret. There are also nine dining options before security and another 22 after security, including Border Grill, Umani Burger, 800 Degrees Pizza and other food outlets that offer baked goods and comfort food.
"Traveling today has changed dramatically since 9/11," Fentress said. "You spend a lot more dwell time in airports, particularly in international spaces, where people often spend up to two hours.
"With amenities for fine or fast dining, shopping and a variety of entertaining things, the new TBIT is an exciting and dynamic space where one can sit and enjoy," Fentress finished.
