Good news for tech junkies flying from Detroit. Detroit Metro Airport has announced that it is offering free wireless Internet service to travelers that is faster and has no time limits.
The new service was set up last week. It is provided by Advanced Wireless Group in both passenger terminals of the airport. The service was already free but it wasn't very quick and had a time limit of 30 minutes. After the time limit was up, travelers were charged a fee. Now travelers will have high-speed Internet with no limits at the airport, the Detroit Free Press reports.
"This sponsor-supported model enables the airport to offer unlimited Internet access with robust speeds at no cost to travelers while continuing to ensure the network can support growth in demand without loss of service quality," the airport said according to USA Today.
"Today's traveler has a high demand for wireless service," airport authority spokesman Scott Winter said according to the Detroit Free Press. "We are pleased this new provider is able to meet that."
The "free" service comes with a slight catch, but it isn't anything too crazy. The free WiFi is partially paid for by 30-second advertisements that are shown at least every 45 minutes.
This wireless upgrade took place over the summer. It is part of Airport's efforts to keep up with the latest technology trends. Among other upgrades are antenna systems which will hopefully boost cellular service.
If free, speedy Internet isn't enough, premium wireless access with additional bandwidth and no advertisements is also available for an additional fee from $4.95 to $7.95 depending on time, number of devices and level of service.
Those who want to connect to the free enhanced wireless service while in Detroit Metro airport can connect to the WiFi connection, AWG Wifi.
