Do you have more than 10,000 Instagram followers? If so, you can get a free room for a night at a hotel in Sydney, Australia.
The 1888 Hotel is designed for photo sharing and the owners are welcoming guests to stay and take advantage of the scenery. Through the special promotion, it is asking popular Instagram members to reach out to potential visitors. The deal is only open to 50 users who have more than 10,000 followers though, the Los Angeles Times reports.
The hotel was made for those who are camera ready. It was named after the year that Kodak released its first box camera and roll film.
The architecture, interior decorating and even the furniture was designed to please Instagram fiends under a $30 million renovation. The hotel has 90 rooms, each of which have Instagrammed photos on the walls. There's also a place to take selfies upon check in. While those with 10,000 followers qualify for a free room if they contact the media department to show their social media followers and follow the hotel on Instagram, rooms start at $150 per night and go up to $400 for the penthouse suite.
The hotel is using this smart marketing took to get Instagram users to visit, take pictures and share them with their thousands of followers so that others may be interested in staying for a night. This seems to be the first hotel to do something like this.
In addition to this special promotion, the hotel holds a competition every month in which they give an additional free night to a guest who shoots the best picture of the hotel.
"There has always been a strong, intrinsic link between travel and photography, but the advent of social media and Instagram has made photo-sharing an even bigger part of the traveler's experience," Paul Fischman, CEO of 8Hotels, which owns the 1888 Hotel said according to Mashable. "People not only want to visit and stay in beautiful places, they also want to capture and share it with their friends and networks as it happens," Fischman said.
