K-Cup Soup: Campbell's to Make Soup Products for Keurig Machines

K-Cup soup? That's right. You will soon be able to make soup from your coffee maker.

Campbell Soup Co. announced that it will start producing K-cup soup packs that can be made with Keurig coffee makers. The soup K-cup includes broth inside, which is brewed over a packet of dry pasta and vegetables.

"It's delicious soup at the touch of a button," Campbell CEO Denise Morrison told the Associated Press.

Green Mountain, which makes the Keurig machine, says that the soup won't be stuck with a coffee taste as their machines are designed to clean themselves during the brewing process. Green Mountain also offers K-cups for fruit drinks and hot chocolate in addition to coffee and tea.

Campbell Soup Co. is still working on the product details, so nutritional information is not yet available, but the company is calling the soup pack a "snack," meaning it probably won't be very big.

The soup company and Green Mountains says they'll introduce three different soup varieties next year, one of which will be Chicken Broth and Noodle.
Campbell has been trying to find ways to appeal to people in their 20's and 30's by introducing new products and flavors.

Green Mountain CEO Brian Kelley says customers actually brought up the idea of putting soup in K-cups. Morrison, an avid Keurig user, introduced the idea to Green Mountain executives at an event less than a year ago. Kelley says the idea went through a lot of consumer testing.

"Consumers told us we should put Campbell soup in these machines," Kelley said.

It's not clear if the agreement between Campbell's and Green Mountain would prevent any other soup company like Progresso, to also offer K-cups.

Campbell's also makes Pepperidge Farm cookies and Prego spaghetti sauces and recently purchased Bolthouse Farms juices, as well as Plum Organics baby food, as they feel out organic product sales.
