Tooth Fairy: Survey Shows Tooth Fairy is More Generous, Giving up to $50 Per Tooth

The Toothy Fairy seems to be more generous than in previous years. According to a new survey, the national average that a child receives per tooth is $3.70.

This year's national average shows a 23 percent increase from the $3 average last year, according to a survey conducted by Visa.

The credit card company offers a free app on iTunes and Facebook that allows parents to input some demographic information to determine how much other people give their children, on average, when a tooth falls out. In addition to the national average, the app also breaks down the average by geography and the age of the parents, MSN reports.

For instance, the survey says that kids living in the Northeast get a bigger payoff from the Tooth Fairy than kids who live in other parts of the country.

Here are the averages by region:

Northeast average: $4.10

West: $3.70

South: $3.60

Midwest: $3.30

The survey also found that 10 percent of kids are getting really big payoffs at $5 per tooth. Visa says this is triple the number from 2011 which shows that there is inflation when it comes to Tooth Fairy gifts. Some kids are getting even more money. About 6 percent of people said they give their kids $20 per tooth and 2 percent give a whopping $50 per tooth.

Some kids aren't so lucky. A large number of kids get jipped by their Tooth Fairy visit. More than one-third of kids only get $1 or less.

The survey shows that the younger the parent is, the more generous the Tooth Fairy is. The average is $5 for parents in the 18 to 14 year old range.

Visa releases the survey information every year as part of its Money Skills for Life" financial education program.

"The Tooth Fairy is throwing money around like pixie dust," Nat Sillin, Visa's head of U.S. Financial Education, said. According to MSN "While more money is exciting news for children, parents should take this opportunity to talk saving and smart money habits with their kids and have the same talk with a perhaps overgenerous Tooth Fairy."
