A man tried to bring a grenade and several fuses on board a plane in Orange County, California.
According to the Sheriff's Department of the Orange County Sheriff's Department bomb squad, 23-year-old Gregory Salyer of Kentucky, was arrested on Tuesday after Transportation Security Administration agents found suspicious devices in his luggage at John Wayne Airport, the Daily Pilot reports.
Salyer had three military artillery fuses and a sting ball grenade in his checked luggage when he boarded a 3:18 p.m. flight to Denver, sheriff's Lt. Jeff Hallock said according to the Daily Pilot. A sting ball grenade is not as lethal as a regular grenade as it shoots out rubber projectiles.
When authorities continued to search Salyer's bag, they found a small knife, Adderall and steroid pills, according to Hallock.
The grenade and fuses were given over to the military. Salyet had been dischared recently and he was not authorized to have the explosive devices.
"It was illegal [for him] to check [them] into his bags," Hallock said. "[And ] it was illegal for him to have because they were property of the military."
The plane that Salyer was on had to be evacuated. Gate 21 in the John Wayne Airport's Terminal C also had to be evacuated.
Bomb squad members were called to respond to the airport at around 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday after the items were found in the screening area. The bomb squad soon determined that there was no threat, according to Hallock.
Salyer was arrested on suspicion of placing the explosive device in his checked luggage, possession of a prohibited weapon in an airport, possession of stolen property and possession of drugs for the pills that were found.
It is not clear what branch of the military that Salyer was discharged from.
