Labor Day 2013: Top 50 Destinations For the Holiday Weekend

It seems as if travelers have had enough sand for one summer as more will be turning to the big cities for their Labor Day 2013 getaways. According to Princeline.com's top Labor Day destinations list, cities beat out the beaches for the holiday destination of choice.

Priceline released its Top 50 Labor Day for the long holiday weekend. They also revealed which destinations have been at the top over the last 11 years. Both lists show that cities are the place of choice for Labor Day weekend travelers.

New York City's Midtown West neighborhood is s the top destination for Labor Day 2013. Chicago's North Michigan Avenue area and Las Vegas's North Strip follow in second and third.

Priceline's Top 50 Labor Day list is based on over 30,000 credit card-backed hotel room booking requests made on priceline.com's Name Your Own Price hotel service for the upcoming holiday weekend. Priceline says their list is one of the most accurate predictors for Labor Day travel trends since it is based on actual bookings and not just polls or votes from travelers.

There is a sensible reason for why travelers choose the city over the beach for the holiday weekend.

"The fall storm season can make Labor Day weather iffy for beach goers," said Priceline's Travel Ekspert Brian Ek. "The bigger cities offer indoor and outdoor fun, including sightseeing, sporting events, restaurants, museums, theater and back-to-school shopping. Some cities make the list because they're big college towns and Labor Day is a time for dorm check-in and even early season football matchups."
