Passengers on a Southwest Airlines flight got quite the surprise when singer-songwriter Gavin DeGraw broke out into spontaneous concert.
One Wednesday, DeGraw performed a two-song concert over the public address system of Flight 425 from Phoenix to Los Angeles. The concert was part of Southwest's special program "Live at 35" as in 35,000 feet, in which they surprise passengers on occasional flights, the Daily Breeze reports.
The only problem is not many passengers knew who DeGraw was. Passenger Heidi Dickinson was told by film crew that DeGraw was a famous musician. She went up to him and took a picture, but didn't know who he was.
"And what's his name again?" she said according to the Daily Breeze. "You'll have to spell it for me. I'm such a dork."
Another passenger, Tom Stellick, 22, didn't know who the "I Don't Want to Be Singer" was either. "No clue, really, to be honest," Stellick said.
DeGraw knew that a majority of the 100-passenger audience wasn't on the flight to hear him sing and he didn't mind.
"Mostly I'm worried about making sure people don't feel like they've been trapped in a concert," he said as he waited for the flight. "Hopefully they won't feel like they're watching a television that has one station and won't shut off."
Despite not being so well known, DeGraw won passengers over by cracking jokes about drinking alcohol with the pilots before the flight and passing a collection pot down the aisle so he could pay his band. He also took pictures and signed autographs for whoever wanted one.
DeGraw took over the intercom about 25 minutes into he flight. He stood on a seat in second row at one point as his guitarist, and percussionist who used the overheard bin as a drum played behind. He sang his more recent hits, "Not Over You" and "Best I Ever Had." The songs were a bit hard to hear over the system.
"That was totally awesome," said Kim Koble, 48. She had never heard of DeGraw before but she got his autograph. "I'll show it off," she said.
