Checking in? No thanks. About 40 pythons were found in a motel room in Canada on Thursday.
According to police, four people, including two children, were living in a motel room with 40 ball pythons. The animals were found at the Bell City Motel which is located in Brantford, Ontario, about 65 miles southwest of Toronto, CNN reports.
The Children's Aid Society of Brant is investigating the welfare of the children that were in the room, Brantford Police Sgt. Cheney Venn told CNN.
It is illegal to own a python in Brantford but no arrests have been made and no charges have been filed as of yet. The authorities have not released the names of the owners.
According to police, the snakes ranged in size form one foot to four and a half feet. The animals seemed to be mistreated as they were kept in several plastic storage bins.
"It appeared as though they were being kept for breeding purposes" Sgt. Venn told CNN. "(They) were not being suitably cared for and were in distress."
The snakes were seized from the hotel room by the county's Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, according to executive director Robin Kuchma. She told CNN that the pythons were sent off to a rescue where those who are experienced can care for them."
CNN tried to reach out to the hotel, but an employee would not answer any questions about the incident. The motel claims to have a no pets policy.
According to Sgt. Venn, the couple and the kids checked into the motel a few days before the snakes were discovered. They had been evicted from their prior residence. It is not clear if the snakes had something to do with their eviction.
This incident comes a few weeks after two brothers were killed by an exotic python as they were sleeping at a friend's house in Campbellton, New Brunswick.
