A German tourist is battling for her life after having her arm bitten off by a shark in an attack near a beach in Hawaii, it has been reported.
The woman in her 20s was snorkeling just 50 yards from Makena beach in South Maui when the shark struck.
"We heard screaming from the water and it was this unbelievable scream like I've never heard before," eyewitness Andree Conley-Kapoi told mauinow.com. "The only time anybody would scream like that is if they are being attacked by a shark," she said.
Conley-Kapoi claims she called emergency services as another person attempted to drag the woman to the shore. Another person in a kayak joined in the rescue effort and rowed out to help the woman.
"The amount of time from when we heard the initial screams to them pulling her out of the water was probably about 10 minutes," Conley-Kapoi said. "I could see that she had a bite on her foot, and I could also see that she lost a limb."
The woman is currently listed in critical condition at Maui Medical Centre after the shark took off her arm and bit her foot.
The beach was closed by county officials and they are keeping an eye out to try to locate the shark. The officials will determine when the beaches can be reopened.
This recent shark attack is the fifth in Maui and the eight in the state this year alone.
