Venice Boardwalk Crash: Man Runs Over Pedestrians In Popular Southern California Spot (VIDEO)

A man drove his car onto the boardwalk in Venice, California, on Saturday evening, according to CNN. The incident occurred two hours before sunset, one of the busiest times of the week on the boardwalk.

The man looked like he wanted "to create mayhem and massacre a lot of people," a witness told CNN.

A woman, identified by the Los Angeles County coroner's office spokeswoman as Alice Gruppioni, 32, was killed. She was visiting California with her husband for their honeymoon.

Nathan Campbell, 38, was charged with murder after turning himself into police hours after running people over, according to Rosario Herrera, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Police Department. Campbell is being held on a bond of $1 million.

"There is no indication that he knew anybody that he hit," Andy Smith, an LAPD Commander, told CNN. "It looks like this guy wanted to run over a bunch of people, one guy bent on doing evil."

Dozens were injured in the vehicular attack, with one victim critically injured and two others suffering serious injuries, according to officials. The driver eventually stopped his vehicle and ran away.

"It was horrible," Katherine Blackburn, a witness, said. "I mean, it was like something out of a movie, something you would never expect to see."

The Blackburn family was eating dinner at the Candle Cafe & Grill when Campbell got into a parked car and drove it around the corner onto the boardwalk, crowded with people.

"This guy had an intent to create mayhem and massacre a lot of people," Dave Blackburn told KCAL, a CNN affiliate.

"The boardwalk was packed with people, and he sped up and purposefully - it looked like purposefully - was just swerving back and forth to run over as many people as he could," Laura Blackburn said.

The Los Angeles police robbery-homicide detectives are leading the investigation.
