East Hampton Idiot Spotter: Facebook Becomes a Place for Residents to Vent About Wealthy Summer Visitors

East Hampton, an upscale town in Suffolk County that's popular with vacationers, now has it's own Facebook page that spotlights idiots, according to NBC News.

The Long Island town is more famous for it's local residents like Jerry Seinfeld then its "idiots," though that may soon change, as a popular new Facebook page, East Hampton Idiot Spotter, was created on July 5. It has received over 17,000 likes and receives about 200,000 views each week.

The site receives user submissions that expose the poor behavior of travelers, including illegally parked cars, vanity license plates and more. A 53-year-old local electrician who has not released his identity to preserve his job created the Facebook page.

"I would have been surprised with 200 fans," he said. "How it took off, I have no clue."

The popularity of the site has grown so quickly that he has since enlisted two administrators to manage the user-submitted content.

Part of the draw of the page is likely the economic divide in the area. Oceanfront property sells for price tags in the millions, while the nearby yearlong residents live much less extravagant lifestyles.

"Between the people who were born there and the city people, it's two different lifestyles," Erica Anne Claire Veirne-Fisher, a designer and resident of East Hampton, told NBC.

Locals refer to the Manhattan residents who visit for the summer as "cidiots."

"Every year, we get more and more," the page creator said of the summer visitors. "They're renting a house for a month or two, so they don't have to be nice or polite to people."

There is a tension between residents and summer visitors, and it only seems to be getting worse.

"When I was a kid, Sunday afternoon, the roads would be filled because people had to go back to work," the creator said. "They don't have to do that no more."

While the Facebook page was originally created to spot "just plain old funny things going on in the Hamptons," it has evolved into a place for residents to vent.
