A teenage tourist died after being attacked by a shark while swimming at a popular beach in Brazil. The horrific incident was caught on video.
Bruna Gobbi, 18, was only in waist deep water in the sea off Recife when a shark suddenly but her left leg. The attack and rescue was captured on local government's security cameras. A lifeguard Jet Ski can be seen approaching swimmers when a sudden movement crated a large splash around Gobbi. The splash is followed by a pool of blood around her, Metro reports.
"The rescuers came in a matter of five minutes but to us it felt like five years," Gobbi's cousin, Daniele Gobbi, told Globo TV.
Signs are posted along the Boa Viagem beach, warning them of previous shark attacks. Gobbi new about the dangers of swimming in the area.
"We knew there were risks of an attack, but I didn't think that it would happen in the shallow but in the deep," the cousin said.
The young girl was brought to shore with serious injuries to her lower left leg. Her foot was still attached but much of her skin was missing.
The girl was taken to a local hospital and later died after surgery to amputate her leg 15 inches above the knee. She had lost a lot of blood.
Gobbi, who lived in Sao Paolo, was believed to have been visiting family in Recife when the attack took place.
The Brazilian government agency that monitors shark attacks have reported 21 shark attacks in Boa Viagem since 1992. Ten of those were fatal. Local authorities have asked the government to ban swimming in shark prone areas.
"We speculate, based on the season and the conditions, that it was a bull shark," Rosangela Lessa, president of the agency that monitors shark attacks said of the recent attack.
