Frequent Flyer Miles for Pets: Virgin Australia Launches the First Program to Offer Points for Furry Friends

Virgin Australia has launched a new frequent flyer program for pets, according to a press release from the company. The program, Velocity Frequent Flyer, the current, award-winning frequent flyer program offered by the airline, has been extended to include pets.

The airline is the first to offer a program of this type for pets. With the new program, Velocity members can earn 300 points every time their dog or cat flies on Virgin Australia's domestic network. Silver, Gold and Platinum members will also receive an additional points bonus.

"Virgin Australia flies almost 30,000 pets each year around Australia, and a large proportion are owned by Velocity members, so we know how important their companions are to them," Neil Thompson, the Velocity Frequent Flyer Chief Executive Officer, said in a written statement. "We are delighted to make their flying experience even more rewarding by unleashing Australia's first frequent flyer program for pets, giving our members another truly unique way to earn Points."

Thompson appeared at the airline launch with Dr. Chris Brown, a celebrity vet and animal lover.

"It's fantastic to see a frequent flyer program recognize how much our pets enrich our lives," Brown said. "Now, not only will our dogs and cats give back to us in the form of unconditional love, but also in the form of our next holiday or retail purchase through Points!"

To celebrate the launch, members will also have the opportunity to earn double Points on purchases made at Online Pet Accessories, Pet Smart and the Vet Shed via the Velocity Global eStore.

"The program builds on the unique family benefits currently available to our members, such as the ability to pool Points and Status Credits with family members," Thompson said. "We will continue to come up with creative and compelling ways to deliver meaningful rewards and recognition to our members."

Velocity Frequent Flyer also announced a nation-wide search to find an official pet ambassador for the program. Australians can enter their pets through Facebook.
