Santa Clara Valley Wine Region is Having a Comeback

The area of Santa Clara Valley, with 22 wineries, came together for the first time to create a consumer event to showcase the delicious results of their vineyard, according to USA Today. The area was an agricultural hub before Silicon Valley became the better-known aspect of the area and basically took over.

In the early twentieth century, there were almost 100 wineries surrounding San Jose. In the 1880's and 90's, the grapes began to become afflicted from phylloxera, followed by prohibition, which led to the vineyards going into a steep decline.

Today, many of the vineyards have recovered and the area now contains 22 wineries in the Santa Clara AVA.

For the first time, they all came together to showcase their wines. The wineries main vintners were present, with a few of the larger wineries, such as Clos La Chance, sending marketing, sales and tasting room staff.

Among the wineries are the Aver Family Vineyards. John Aver purchased his grapes from Gap's Crown vineyard on the Sonoma Coast. He has created a Rhone blend and a chardonnay that were a hit.

The De Rose vineyard, located in San Benito County had a chardonnay as well. They also had a popular Malbec. Both wines were also set at a reasonable price point.

Kirgin Cellars is a vineyard that was previously best known for its cricket courts and event center, but has remodeled itself, presenting a malvasia Bianca that was also set at a reasonable price point of $18.

Jason Goelz is a winemaker who has partnered with a father and son growing team, both named Stephen Dorcich, and they have made Syrah's, chardonnays and sauvignon blancs, as well as popular cabernet, which set the standard for the region.

The region is best known for its cabernets. Among the best rated are the Santa Clara Valley and the Monte Bello Ridge cabernets.
